A strange, sorrowful sci-fi journey about what remains of you when bodies and memories are for sale.
Few science fiction series ask as plainly what makes a person the same person from one day to the next. This 2008 MADHOUSE production puts that question at the center of a dystopian world where memories can be moved between bodies, and then lets the answers get uncomfortable.
It is a psychological adventure with a romance at its core, and it leans philosophical and tragic. Space travel and body swapping give it a surreal, restless feel, and the mood is melancholy more than thrilling. Expect to be asked to think about identity, wealth and loss rather than handed tidy action beats. It is the kind of series that works best when you give it your full attention.
It runs twelve episodes, short enough to finish in a week of evenings. About fifty thousand people have it on their lists and they rate it well, so plenty of viewers have found it, but it is still a long way from a household name. You can watch it on Crunchyroll, Amazon Prime Video or Tubi.
