Urusei Yatsura Movie 2: Beautiful Dreamer

Only about nine thousand people have logged this 1984 film, yet those who did rate it well, which makes it more of a quiet favorite than a famous one. It is the second movie built around the Urusei Yatsura cast, made by Studio Pierrot, and it keeps the comedy the franchise is known for while pushing it somewhere stranger.

The setup is ordinary: a school gearing up for its festival, everyone frantic and short on sleep. The fun is in how the film plays with time and memory until that cheerful rush begins to feel off. Aliens and even tanks turn up, so the humor stays silly, but there is a dreamy, wistful drama underneath, with a romance running through it. Expect a mix of laughs and unease rather than a straight farce.

As a single feature-length film, it asks for just one sitting. It suits viewers who like comedy with a science fiction twist, or anyone curious about 1980s anime that does something odd with a familiar premise. You can find it on Tubi and Amazon Prime Video.
