Sacrificial Princess and the King of Beasts

The setup is bleak, but the tags suggest a story more about rehabilitation and coming of age than horror. They list politics, war and magic next to shoujo and monster boy, so this is a romance with real friction between peoples. The heroine is a calm presence among beasts, and the story is framed as her path to becoming queen.

Expect a slow-building relationship drama more than an action series. The Beast King and the human girl come from sides that distrust each other, and the political setting keeps that tension in view. Fans of animal-like and monstrous love interests will find plenty to like here, and so will readers of fantasy romance who want the world to matter as much as the couple.

It runs 24 episodes from J.C.STAFF, which makes it a two-cour commitment but not a huge one. The AniList score is 77 out of 100, with close to 34,000 users listing it. That is a respectable audience for a 2023 series that many romance fans may have skipped. It is a fit for viewers who like their fantasy emotional and a little dark. Watch it on Crunchyroll, Bilibili TV or YouTube.
