Detective Conan: The Last Wizard of the Century
A thief announces his target in advance, and a detective in a child's body cannot resist.
This 1999 mystery caper starts with a calling card: before anything happens, the thief tells the police what he plans to steal and where. That gives the film a game-like energy, a showman and a detective each trying to stay one step ahead of the other.
Conan is a sharp mind in a child's body, and Kaitou Kid is the rival he cannot stop chasing. The target is the Russian Imperial Easter Egg, held in Osaka, but the case turns out to be bigger than a theft, so the film mixes light adventure with a real puzzle. The tone is brisk and shounen-friendly, with the police always close at hand.
It is a single film from TMS Entertainment, so you do not have to commit to a long series to enjoy a clever chase. More than fifteen thousand people have it on a list, and they like it, which is a respectable showing for something from the late nineties. If you like heist stories where the fun is in the cat-and-mouse, this one is built for that. Netflix has it.
