Why it's a gem
Some comedies depend entirely on one wonderfully unserious lead, and this 1993 series is built that way. Tylor is either a fool or a genius, and the show seems happy to leave you guessing. The tags include parody and satire, so the target is the usual pomp of military space adventure.
It is still a space opera, with a run-down ship, a crew of misfits and a looming conflict with an empire. That gives the jokes something to push against. The cast is mostly adults, and the real robot tag suggests the setting is played with a straight face while the characters are not. Expect an easygoing comic tone rather than a tense war saga, though the larger conflict is there if you want it.
With 26 episodes from Tatsunoko Production, it is an easy season to finish. The AniList score is 75 out of 100 from nearly 16,000 users, a solid showing for a show of its age. It suits viewers who like older anime, workplace comedy and affectionate jabs at genre habits. It streams on YouTube and Crunchyroll.

Synopsis
Justy Ueki Tylor had his life all planned out: join the military, get a cushy desk job, and then retire with a big fat pension check. The perfect plan... until he wandered into a hostage situation and somehow managed to save an admiral! Now Tylor - a man who wouldn't know what discipline was if it bit him on the backside - has been made Captain of the space cruiser Soyokaze. The crew of this run-down ship is the craziest rag-tag team of misfits you're ever likely to see, and they're not too fond of their complacent new leader. But they'd better learn to work together, because they're about to go head to head with the mighty Raalgon Empire. For better or for worse, the Earth's fate has been placed in the hands of a man who's either a total idiot - or an absolute genius! (Source: RightStuf)
