The Promised Neverland

Why it's a gem

Tension is the main draw here. It starts as a cozy picture of orphans being cared for and quickly becomes a survival thriller, with horror, mystery and psychological games between clever children and the adults around them.

The cast is mostly kids, but this is not a children's story: expect dread, hard choices and tragedy. The stakes stay high.

At only 12 episodes, it's a quick watch, though the story doesn't wrap up everything for you. It suits people who like dystopian puzzles and escape plots, and who can handle some unsettling moments. If you want something warm and easygoing, look elsewhere.
